Final interview draft
Her eyes sparkled as I proceeded to ask her question. Even though the interview started slowly, so I moved with Angie, she was sitting in the class with a bunch of other students. There were a bunch of indistinct chatters, and she was sitting next to me and looked very curious. She was wearing this plain T-shirt, and lightly washed skinny jeans, all coordinated with a pair of sporty sneakers. I proceeded and asked her if she likes to read any book? If she does, what is her favorite book? Her face lights up when she hears that I want to know what books she is into and how long she is reading. She answered something like that “I don’t really read any books, but I want to get into it.” but a book called Othello caught her attention. She liked that book because it was one of the Shakespeare novels that caught her attention. When she was telling me about her book, she was talking about it like Angie knew what she was talking about. She asked me if I liked any book which took me by surprise. I told her that I was fond of a book called “Thousand splendid suns,” which is also a novel by “Khaled Hosseini” who talked about the illegitimate child, Who suffers from both stigmas surrounding her birth along with the abuse she faces throughout her marriage.
The followed up question was about traveling. I asked her where she wants to visit the most? And my follow up question was the reasons why she wants to go to that place? Without thinking, she said, “Ecuador, my family is very united, and when I was over there, we would go out a lot during the weekend and holidays to the beach or out to eat.” She was born there and misses Ecuador because of her family, who still live there food and the culture. Before my question, she said Spain because of the “architecture” and overall, the country is beautiful. Angie was very straight forward and was very humble when she told me the time she felt very accomplished, which was during high school when Angie got the internship because she got accepted during her first try. “I know anybody would say that this is not a big accomplishment, but for me, it was since I got accepted without having any experiences.” She engaged me when I asked her when she felt most challenged, and she said: “oh, during interviews when I present in front of the whole class.” I asked, but I am interviewing you, and her response was something like that, “but we are friends getting to know each other.” We both agreed that speaking in front of strangers is always a hard part of daily life. She is very family-oriented and enjoys the quality time with them while she was telling me about her family there was this smile and she was playing with her hair and wanted to talk. So I decided to ask her about her role model, and I wasn’t surprised when she answered her sister. She said my sister is my role model since she was the first one to go to college here; she followed her footsteps and continued to pursue her dreams. She told me that her sister is very “independent” , very goal-oriented and knows what she is doing with her life. Adding more details, she said that her sister has a very close relationship with her lever since she is back from finishing the undergraduate education; she is always giving me advice”. During this talk, she was doing nothing but smiling and wanted to keep on talking about her older sister. I was inquisitive when she spoke about “pursuing her dreams,” so I dropped the question about what she sees herself doing after she is done with four years of studying? Angie smiled at me and said, continue to study for the Master’s degree in economics and, along with studying, she is also going to look for jobs that are related to her major. As I was approaching the final questions which she misheard but still proceeded to answer it by saying how she is the most romantic type, but going for a walk would be something she enjoys doing. I was confused and had to repeat my question, which was what would be the perfect day for you? She burst into a peal of laughter and told me that she heard “perfect date” instead of the typical day. She answered my question by again bringing up spending quality time with her family, along with doing some volunteering, in other words giving back to people.
What I learned about her by just asking a few questions is that she is very family- oriented, really likes to spend her time with her family. She has a fear of speaking in front of a bunch of people who are strangers. And not only that she would love to go back to her country. She really surprised me with some of her questions and it brought both of us closer with some basic background knowledge.
